The principle: follow the microclimates
A good two-week Thai itinerary doesn't start from a fixed list of destinations, but from the season. The same circuit can be excellent in January and disastrous in August.
High season (November to February): the grand classic
Bangkok (2-3 days), then Ayutthaya or Chiang Mai (3 days), before finishing with an Andaman island like Krabi, Koh Lanta or Phuket (5-6 days). The sea is calm and the sun guaranteed.
Summer (July-August): head for the gulf
In summer, replace the Andaman with the gulf: Bangkok (2 days), Chiang Mai (3 days, with its green season), then Koh Samui, Koh Phangan and Koh Tao (7 days) for beach and diving under almost guaranteed sunshine.
Tips to avoid missteps
Don't lock everything in advance in low season: ferries can be adjusted according to the weather. And allow a margin of 1 to 2 days if you're chaining islands.
Frequently asked questions
How many days do you need to visit Thailand?
Two weeks allow you to combine Bangkok, a cultural region and an island. Ten days are enough for two main stops; three weeks allow you to cover the north and south.
Which itinerary for 2 weeks in August?
Favor the Gulf of Thailand: Bangkok, Chiang Mai then Koh Samui, Koh Phangan and Koh Tao, which are dry in July-August.
Should you book hotels in advance?
In high season (December-February), yes, especially in the islands. In low season, you can book more flexibly, depending on the weather.
