Tana Toraja, in the highlands of Sulawesi, is home to the Toraja people, known for their traditional buffalo-horn-roofed houses (tongkonan) and elaborate funeral rites, sometimes held months after a death.

Toraja funeral ceremonies, which can gather hundreds of people and last several days, remain one of Indonesia's most distinctive traditions.
Burial cliffs and trekking
The surrounding cliffs hold graves carved straight into the rock, guarded by carved wooden effigies (tau tau), reachable on hikes through the terraced rice fields.
Tana Toraja is reached by road from Makassar (about 8 hours) or a small local airport; June to September, the dry season, stays the most walkable period for hiking.
