Sukhothai was the first capital of the Siamese kingdom, founded in the 13th century, before the capital later moved to Ayutthaya and then Bangkok. Its historical park, a Unesco World Heritage site, gathers the ruins of dozens of temples and Buddha statues amid well-kept ponds and lawns.
A historical park by bike
The site, large and flat, is classically toured by bicycle, a pleasant way to move from temple to temple without the midday heat of walking.
A Khmer and Siamese legacy
Sukhothai's architecture marks a transition between the Khmer style inherited from Angkor and a more slender Siamese style that would become characteristic of classical Thai art.
Sukhothai has a small airport with direct flights from Bangkok, or is reached by road from Chiang Mai (about 4-5 hours); the dry season (November to February) stays the most comfortable for cycling around the site.
