Sapa, in the mountains of northwestern Vietnam near the Chinese border, owes its fame to its terraced rice fields and the diversity of its ethnic minorities (Hmong, Red Dao, Tay). Altitude gives it a noticeably cooler climate than the rest of the country, sometimes even frost in winter.

The terraced rice fields cascading down the valleys around Sapa are explored on foot, on hikes from a few hours to several days between local minority villages.
Fansipan, the roof of Indochina
Mount Fansipan, the highest point in Vietnam and the Indochinese peninsula, is reachable by cable car from Sapa, a fast alternative to the multi-day trek on foot.
Sapa is reached by overnight train or bus from Hanoi (about 5-6 hours by road); March-April and October-November offer the best compromise between green or golden rice fields and clear visibility.
