Phuket is Thailand's largest island, connected to the mainland by the Sarasin Bridge. Once a tin-mining and fishing port, it has become the country's most developed beach destination, with accommodation ranging from big international chains to small family-run guesthouses.
Beaches and atmosphere
Patong, the busiest beach, holds most of the island's nightlife. Kata, Karon, Kamala or Nai Harn, further south, offer a noticeably calmer atmosphere while staying under an hour's drive from Patong.
Day trips and diving
Phuket is a launch point for day trips to the Phi Phi Islands or Phang Nga Bay (home to the famous James Bond Island). The diving and snorkeling sites around the Racha or Similan Islands (mainly accessible November-April) are known for their visibility.
Old Town and heritage
Phuket Town's historic district has preserved its early-20th-century Sino-Portuguese architecture, a legacy of the tin-mining boom — a sharp contrast with the beach atmosphere found on the rest of the island.
Phuket International Airport receives direct flights from several major Asian cities, often making it a direct entry point for a trip focused on southern Thailand, without routing through Bangkok.
