Phong Nha, in central Vietnam, holds the country's largest network of limestone caves, including Son Doong, considered the largest known natural cave in the world. The surrounding Unesco-listed national park remains one of Vietnam's wildest regions.
Son Doong and the great caves
Access to Son Doong stays strictly limited and guided (a multi-day expedition, with a restricted number of spots each year), but other caves in the park, like Paradise Cave, remain open for a classic day visit.
Underground rivers and jungle
Phong Nha-Ke Bang National Park, covered in dense jungle, hides a network of underground rivers explored by boat in several of the caves open to the public.
Phong Nha is reached by road from Hue or Dong Hoi (which has an airport); February to April stays the driest period, ahead of the heavy rain that also hits this stretch of central Vietnam late in the year.
