Nan, a remote province on the Laos border, remains one of northern Thailand's least visited regions despite a preserved Lanna cultural heritage and mountain scenery still little developed for mass tourism.
Lanna temples and crafts
The old temples in Nan town preserve remarkably well-kept Lanna murals, alongside a still-living local textile craft tradition.
Mountains and the Nan River
The Nan River, which crosses the province before joining the Chao Phraya further south, and the surrounding mountains offer preserved rural scenery, away from the north's classic circuits.
Nan has a small airport with flights from Bangkok, or is reached by road from Chiang Mai or Chiang Rai (several hours' drive); the cool dry season (November to February) stays the most pleasant.
