Mae Hong Son, a mountainous province on the Myanmar border, is known for its legendary loop road of several hundred bends circling out from Chiang Mai through the northern mountains. The region, marked by strong Shan influence, remains less developed than Chiang Mai or Chiang Rai.

This mountain road, often ridden by motorbike or driven from Chiang Mai, crosses misty landscapes and terraced rice fields, with viewpoints over the Myanmar border.

Mae Hong Son has a small airport with flights from Chiang Mai; the cool dry months (November to February) stay the most comfortable for riding the loop on two wheels.
