Lake Toba, in the highlands of Sumatra, is the world's largest volcanic lake, formed by one of the most powerful supervolcanic eruptions in the planet's history. At its center sits Samosir Island, itself larger than Singapore.
Samosir Island and Batak culture
Samosir Island, at the heart of the lake, remains home to Batak culture, with its traditional curved-roof houses and carved tombs, distinct from the rest of Indonesia.
Waterfalls and highland cool
The plateau's altitude (about 900 meters) gives it a cooler climate than the rest of Sumatra, alongside several waterfalls reachable from the lake's shores.
Lake Toba is reached by road from Medan (about 4-5 hours) or a small local airport; June and July, in the heart of the dry season, stay the most favorable months.
