Khao Sok National Park protects one of the world's oldest tropical rainforests, older than the Amazon by some scientific estimates. The artificial Cheow Lan Lake, ringed by dramatic limestone karsts, has become its best-known image, with floating bungalows set on the water.

Jungle and Cheow Lan Lake

The lake, formed by a dam built in the 1980s, submerged an entire valley, leaving only the limestone peaks emerging — giving the landscape the look of Ha Long Bay set in a forest.

Wildlife

Khao Sok's forest is home to elephants, gibbons and a wide variety of birds, observable on guided day hikes or night boat trips on the lake.

Khao Sok is 1.5-2 hours by road from Surat Thani or Khao Lak; the dry season (December to March) is the most walkable, as the monsoon can turn some trails muddy.
