Khao Lak is a beach resort strung along the Andaman coast north of Phuket, greener and less dense than its neighbor. It's mainly the closest gateway to the Similan Islands, considered one of Thailand's best diving spots.
Similan Islands
Similan Islands Marine National Park, reached by speedboat from Khao Lak, stays closed during the monsoon (roughly mid-May to mid-October) to let the ecosystem recover.
Beaches and national parks
Unlike Patong or Chaweng, Khao Lak's beaches stay lined with vegetation rather than buildings, with several national parks close by.
Khao Lak is an hour's drive from Phuket airport; departures to the Similans are only possible during the dry season, from November to April.
