Hue was the imperial capital of unified Vietnam from 1802 to 1945, under the Nguyen dynasty. The city, built on the banks of the Perfume River, keeps a fortified citadel and numerous royal tombs scattered through the surrounding countryside.

The citadel, inspired by Beijing's Forbidden City, and the royal tombs (including those of Tu Duc and Khai Dinh) a few kilometers from the city rank among the country's best-preserved historical sites.
A renowned cuisine
As a former imperial capital, Hue developed a refined cuisine of its own, now considered among the best tables in Vietnam.
Hue has its own airport, or is reached by road or train from Da Nang (about 2-3 hours, over the Hai Van Pass); February to April stays the driest period.
