Ha Long Bay, on Vietnam's northeast coast, is one of the country's most iconic natural sites: nearly two thousand islets and limestone karsts emerge from calm water, a landscape on the Unesco World Heritage list.
Junk boat cruise
Nearly all visitors explore the bay on an overnight or multi-night cruise aboard a traditional junk boat, with stops for kayaking and cave visits.
Caves and karst islets
Sung Sot Cave ("Surprise Cave"), one of the bay's largest, and the many viewpoints reachable by kayak are classic stops on a cruise.
Ha Long is 2.5 hours by road from Hanoi; April as well as October to December offer the best visibility, as haze is more common in winter and early spring.
