Chiang Rai, Thailand's northernmost province, marks the edge of the Golden Triangle, the historic meeting point of Thailand, Laos and Myanmar. More low-key than Chiang Mai further south, it stands out mainly for its bold, contemporary temple architecture.

Contemporary temples

Wat Rong Khun (the White Temple) and Wat Rong Suea Ten (the Blue Temple), both built recently by local artists, contrast with the traditional architecture of the country's older temples.

Golden Triangle and hill tribes

The Golden Triangle area, where the Mekong meets the Myanmar and Laos borders, is visited on a day trip from Chiang Rai, along with the ethnic hill-tribe villages of the surrounding hills.

Chiang Rai has its own airport, with direct flights from Bangkok; the coolest months (November to February) are also the most pleasant for visiting temples and hills on foot.
