Bukit Lawang, on the edge of Gunung Leuser National Park in Sumatra, is one of the few places in the world to observe Sumatran orangutans in their natural habitat, an endangered species endemic to the island.
Orangutan watching
Former rehabilitation programs habituated some orangutans to human presence, making it possible to observe them on guided treks through the surrounding jungle.
Jungle trekking
Gunung Leuser National Park, one of Sumatra's last great primary forests, is explored on hikes from one day to several, led by local guides.
Bukit Lawang is 3-4 hours by road from Medan; June to August, in the heart of the dry season, stays the most walkable period for jungle trekking.
