Mount Bromo, an active volcano in East Java, has become one of Indonesia's most recognizable tourism symbols for its smoking crater surrounded by a vast expanse of volcanic ash known as the Sea of Sand.
Sunrise over the Sea of Sand
The pre-dawn climb to a nearby viewpoint to watch sunrise over the crater and surrounding Sea of Sand is the classic ritual of a Bromo visit.
The Tengger massif
Bromo belongs to the Tengger volcanic massif, home to the Tenggerese people, who practice a form of Hinduism distinct from Bali's, with their own annual ceremonies.
Bromo is reached by road from Surabaya or Malang (about 3-4 hours); June to September, in the heart of the dry season, offers the best sunrise visibility.
