Bangkok is Thailand's capital and largest city, built along the Chao Phraya River. It mixes ornate Buddhist temples, lively markets and a modern skyline of skyscrapers and shopping malls. It's also the country's main international gateway: nearly all long-haul flights land at Suvarnabhumi or Don Mueang airport before onward travel to the rest of Thailand.
Temples and city life
The Grand Palace, Wat Arun (the Temple of Dawn, on the river's west bank) and Wat Pho (home to its huge reclining Buddha) form the city's historic core. By contrast, the Yaowarat Chinatown district is known for its street food and nightlife, and the weekend-only Chatuchak Market is one of the largest markets in the world.
Getting around
The BTS (elevated) and MRT (underground) rail network covers most tourist districts and bypasses the traffic jams that are common at rush hour. The Chao Phraya River is itself a transport route, with boat shuttles connecting several major sights.
With children
Bangkok has several large parks (Lumpini Park, right in the city center) and shopping malls with aquariums or indoor play areas — a practical option during the hottest hours of the day.
Bangkok is a year-round destination thanks to its two international airports; allow at least 2-3 days to cover the highlights before heading north or to the southern islands.
